Profile of the Deputy Principal
Prof. Dr. Fredrick Nyongesa Kassilly is a Biodiversity Fellow of the United Nations University, a North-South Dialogue Scholar and an Associate Professor of Conservation Biology. He holds Post-Doctorate training certificates in Conservation Hunting from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (2008) and in Biodiversity Conservation from the United Nations University, Tokyo (2003). This is in addition to an MSc degree in Applied Leadership and Management from the Management University of Africa, Nairobi (2015), a Doctorate degree (Dr. Nat.Techn) in Conservation Biology from the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (2001), an MSc degree in Ethology (1993) and a BSc (Hons) degree in Range Management (1988), both from the University of Nairobi (Kenya). He is an alumnus of the National Youth Service Paramilitary Training School, Gilgil, Alliance High School (“A” level), Kibabii High School (“O” level) and Chekulo Primary School. He has also attended several short courses including but not limited to Financial Management, Quality Management Systems, Technical Writing and Publishing, Counseling, Balanced Score Card , and, New Trends in Science Teaching.
Prof. Dr. Kassilly joined Turkana University College from the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute (KWSTI) where he served as Deputy Principal and Head of Studies since 2009. Before joining KWSTI, Prof. Dr. Kassilly served as a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Game Management at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, and as a founding Chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology where he also served as a member of the Institutional Development Committee (IDEC), Statutes Committee and Staff Training Committee of the University Senate. Prior to that he served as a lecturer and departmental examinations officer for the Zoology department at Egerton University, Njoro. He is currently serving as an external examiner for undergraduate examinations and as a thesis examiner for graduate students at several local and foreign universities.
He possesses 25 years experience in training needs assessment (TNA), curriculum development, implementation and evaluation, general tertiary college teaching and learner mentorship and community service. He has 15 years hands-on experience in academic leadership and administration at senior levels in tertiary colleges and possesses a wealth of experience in preparing and administering institutional budgets, project proposals and strategic plans.
Prof. Dr. Kassilly is not only a member of several professional associations but he also holds membership to a number of quasi-professional groups offering community services in the fields of education, youth empowerment, and nature conservation for poverty eradication. He has extensively researched and published several papers in reputable international journals in the field of human dimensions of nature conservation and is currently a peer reviewer for leading international journals in the field of conservation biology. He is widely traveled and has attended several local, regional and international conferences, workshops and seminars.
What we do
The Academic and Student Affairs Division is responsible for matters that constitute the core functions of the institution namely curriculum development, teaching, academic staff training, research, consultancy, outreach activities and mentoring students into responsible citizens of the world. Centrally, the division designs and runs the academic calendar of the university college including admission and registration of students, their academic, careers and social counseling plus ensuring quality in their teaching and evaluation. The division also provides library and ICT services to students and staff of TUC and is responsible for students’ discipline and welfare matters including provision of accommodation, catering, health and organizing co-curricular activities including games, sports, leadership and life skills training, general recreation and providing support to TUC students’ organization (TUCSO).
