About Research and Development
The Legal Notice No.115 of August, 2011 of The National Research Fund specifies that one of the major functions of a University College is to participate in research, transmission, preservation and enhancement of knowledge. It is also to stimulate the intellectual participation of students in the economic, social, cultural, scientific and technological development of Kenya. The integration of Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I), into the socio-economic development processes, is an enabler in the creation of better production processes and enhanced national capacities as it results to improved national pool of skills relevant to priority areas.
Turkana University College (TUC) prioritizes scientific research, technology and innovation as the key drivers for economic growth, solutions to socio-environmental problems and poverty reduction. Indeed, the University College envisages a unique and holistic academic research in humanity, science and technology through the provision of complete university education and training to create, preserve and disseminate knowledge and skills for advancement of humanity.
The Directorate of Research and Development (R&D) is established within the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (ASA). Coordinated by a Director who is answerable to the Deputy Principal (Academic and Student Affairs), the Directorate is charged with the responsibility of administering the Research Policy, coordinating research proposal ethical review, identifying and circulating sources of research funding opportunities and bringing the same to the attention of researchers. It also ensures that researchers are nurtured and motivated through the provisions of expert guidance in research proposal development. The Directorate also compiles a database of the University College research publications and mobilizes researchers from various academic disciplines to write proposals in response to Calls for Proposals made by various grant organizations.
The Directorate of Research and Development is guided by the following objectives:
